Kline Academy of Fine Arts recently came across some information we found very interesting and valuable, so we decided to share it with you all.

5 reasons to support the arts

Have a Positive Social Impact:
For thousands of years, song and dance have brought communities together. Today, the arts create a space where all members can come together.

Enhance your Mood:
The arts offer an escape from the troubles of everyday life. When you're writing, singing, painting, or playing an instrument, you're able to temporarily set stress aside to focus on enjoying your craft.

Help The Economy:
The arts make up a major chunk of the economy - 4.2% of the GDP, to be exact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. While that number may seem small, it's higher than the economic shares of the nation's transportation, tourism, and agriculture sectors.

Encourage Healing:
Different types of arts programs are employed in many different healthcare facilities. Patients that engage with these arts programs heal faster, manage their pain better, and spend less time in the hospital.

Generate Creativity: 
The arts are a self-perpetuating activity. Creativity is generated from the right side of the brain. The more you engage it, the more creative you become, like flexing a muscle in your brain.

William Neukomm, our amazing Beginning Drawing Foundations instructor, is featured in "LIKENESS" a Fine Art Exhibition exploring Portrait and Figure today.

"Realism, Impressionism, Abstraction.. what do we use to describe a work that is a combination of the three? How much does a portrait or figurative work need to look like the model or subject these days?  Is capturing a “Likeness” as important in today's fine art works as it once was? Is figure and portrait painting anything like it was back in the 1800 and early 1900s? or has the art world finally adopted a liberal view on the importance of "likeness" in a figure painting.

Today in the realist figurative world see a mixture of genres coming together in the same painting, or exhibiting side by side, and it's not just in America. Russian artists, Icelandic artists, French artist and more have been influenced, be it by instagram shots of new works they can easily access now, or the rise in international art fairs and exhibitions that are traveling around the globe."

Hill’s latest book is by far the largest study ever conducted that involves eye-tracking technology and art in order to learn where people precisely look, for how long, and in what order. 

By adding in facial coding, Hill also captures not only where people look but how they feel about what they’re seeing. In addition to results that cover 88 famous art works from the Renaissance to today, Hill’s lecture will also explore how knowing facial expressions, per emotion, can enrich your understanding and appreciation of portraiture based on his previous book, Famous Faces Decoded: A Guidebook for Reading Others.

Beginning Drawing Foundation Instructor 

William Neukomm is a modern, realist painter. William is a professional, exhibiting artist who has won numerous awards. 

He has an impressive education in the arts: a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kansas City Art Institute, A Diploma in both Drawing and Painting from the Florence Academy of Art and a Master of Fine Arts from Laguna College of Art and Design. 

"I believe that the use of representational imagery is the best way to communicate specific visual information. The concept is simple, but not easy. It requires mastery. By rooting my work in the European tradition, I am able to address complex themes in an accessible manner. Mimesis, however, is not sufficient. I strive to make art that builds upon the virtuosity of the past while also being unabashedly modern and distinctly American. My current work focuses on exalting the domestic scene. As a father I have an excuse to play and to relive the joy and pain of childhood. Being a parent also prompts me to tap into my own fears as I attempt to shield my children from negative experiences.”

Delphine Kelly, at only 11 years of age, started her artistic journey with Kline Academy and has been with us for over a year. 

Delphine has taken drawing classes with Lana Gloschat and is currently exploring the art of oil painting with Juri Umagami. Delphine has developed a great understanding of the fundamentals in both drawing and painting which have helped her achieve some outstanding work.

Use a Hand for Your Art Making 

Passing on Artist's Wisdom by Juri Umagami

One interesting thing I learnt in college was to use your hand for art making / marketing. 

Art making can be divided into 6 important elements:

Pinkie: Production
You prepare your budget (how much can you spend? how much are you going to sell it for?), tools (canvas, paints, brushes or clay, film...) and get some help (space / equipment to rent or assistants). 

Ring: Context
It's genre. In which genre does your art belong to? Pop? Classical? Expressionism? Setting up this idea helps you see where to distribute your art (*Thumb). 

Middle: Content
The physical aspects of the artwork such as medium, image, symbol, color, value, space... Your decision making on "what are you using" for your art. This is important as art world these days also focuses on investigating "materials" you present. 

Index: Intent
Why are you painting this (or making this)? Your intention in art making can be from "This is a gift for my mother!" to "I want to make the world better!" You may not be realizing but any image you create comes from your personal experience and tells your story or story you want to tell. When you keep your intent consistent that leads you to "a body of work." 

Thumb: Distribution 
Most artists are not good at this... Where are you going to show your art? How are you going to let people know about it? Instagram has become a huge asset to art business. It is probably the easiest way to connect with your audience and sell your art. I am old fashioned and love going to galleries as I believe art looks better and tells more in person. If I were you, I'd start looking for galleries that present the genre you are in. You bring yourself to openings and introduce yourself (as it is rare galleries find and contact artists these days) then use SNS for the invitation for your shows. 

Palm: Documentation
Make sure you document your artwork. Images of your work are what get people interested in what you are doing. I usually have two: one that in high resolution and the other in about 300 You can have a decent camera or just have someone do the job. 


If you are taking my drawing & painting classes, you know that you learn real time tested skills, the skills have been passed down for centuries. 

Now what will you draw and paint after Bargue drawings and master copy paintings? 
The answer is in your hand...
