Relief offers the qualities of both 2-D and 3-D working methods. 

Ultimately it is also an illusion of roundness as it is in fact flattened and compressed. 

Therefore it is like painting. 

And yet the nuances of all forms are modeled. 

Thus it is also sculpture.

Steven Assael (born 1957) is an American painter recognized nationally as one of the leading representational figurative artists of his generation. His portrayal of the human image is empathic, ennobling, and psychologically penetrating. Assael's figure compositions synthesize the characteristics of the past masters with a selective eye for the present, suffusing elements of naturalism and romanticism to blend contemporary techniques with those of the past.

Assael's paintings have been called Post-Post Modern. He works strictly from live models. More variety, and a broader range of values and colors, a chronicle of the transformations of changing light, spent over real minutes and hours with his model." In speaking of his work and how it contributes to contemporary art, Assael stated that, "Even though art is dead as we have known it, painting is not."

Born and raised in New York, NY, Assael showed an enthusiasm for art at a young age, taking art classes at the Museum of Modern Art at the age of four. He attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and currently teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York and at The New York Academy of Art.

Assael's work is included in public and private collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, NY) and the Chicago Institute of Fine Arts (Chicago, IL). In 1999 his work was exhibited in a ten-year retrospective at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, Washington and CBS Sunday Morning ran a feature on the artist and the show. Assael is represented by Forum Gallery and currently resides in New York City.

3 of the biggest mistakes artists make in creating their art in my class...

1) Being result oriented and not process oriented.

It takes time. You are not going to magically be an artist in 3 hours. enjoy the process, know you have a lot to learn.

2) Wrong materials. I don't require expensive paint, just the right colors. I also need students to have the proper palette and brushes. Students should also always have multiple canvases.

3) Bad photo reference and taking the reference too literally. I have since been providing my own photos and making it mandatory that the students start with mine.

3 things to be a better artist.

1) Commit to taking classes and involve the arts in your routine everyday. 

2) Look at art. In person, on the Internet, wherever. See what kinda of art moves you. Copy it, emulate it. Try to be it but better, different, more you. 

3) Come to class prepared, with references, with canvases toned, with a plan. It's fine to waver from your plan but don't take an hour to park your car, set up your palette, etc.

Three biggest mistakes in figure drawing:

-Drawing details too soon

-Not looking for the "big picture" shapes

-Not measuring proportions

-Drawing while not looking

-Drawing too hard

-Not grouping values

Three things to make better paintings:

-Think about Value before Color

-Mix clean Colors, use clean brushes

-Be intentional with every brush stroke you lay down (dont mush paint around)

-Think about form and structure and how to convey it with your brush

-If things get messy, wipe off and start again

-Squint and see the big statement

-Details come last
