What’s the actual experience people have when standing before a work of art, taking it in?
Find out thanks to this unique guest lecture that will be of interest to artists, photographers and the general public at large. Hill’s latest book is by far the largest study ever conducted that involves eye-tracking technology and art in order to learn where people precisely look, for how long, and in what order.
By adding in facial coding, Hill also captures not only where people look but how they feel about what they’re seeing. In addition to results that cover 88 famous art works from the Renaissance to today, Hill’s lecture will also explore how knowing facial expressions, per emotion, can enrich your understanding and appreciation of portraiture based on his previous book, Famous Faces Decoded: A Guidebook for Reading Others.
What you will learn:
How much time do viewers actually take
Where viewers of art look most often, or first
Which forms and colors engage viewers the most, typically
What kind of titles work well and which don't
What kinds of subject matter attract the eye and heart
William Neukomm is a modern, realist painter. William is a professional, exhibiting artist who has won numerous awards.
He has an impressive education in the arts: a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kansas City Art Institute, A Diploma in both Drawing and Painting from the Florence Academy of Art and a Master of Fine Arts from Laguna College of Art and Design.
"I believe that the use of representational imagery is the best way to communicate specific visual information. The concept is simple, but not easy. It requires mastery. By rooting my work in the European tradition, I am able to address complex themes in an accessible manner. Mimesis, however, is not sufficient. I strive to make art that builds upon the virtuosity of the past while also being unabashedly modern and distinctly American. My current work focuses on exalting the domestic scene. As a father I have an excuse to play and to relive the joy and pain of childhood. Being a parent also prompts me to tap into my own fears as I attempt to shield my children from negative experiences.”

Thomas Garner
Renaissance Style Figure Instructor
Thomas Garner studied at UCSD at a time when painting and drawing, in the traditional sense, were not even offered in the Visual Arts curriculum.
His artistic foundation is built on Conceptual Art and semiology. Later Garner went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice where he learned to paint and found a strong nexus between craft and concept.
"My painting style started out as photo-realistic, but with time I learned the craft of the masters so that now I am able to create a unified mechanism between technique and content, painting about painting. I strive to learn everything I can to about every aspect of figurative painting that has brought me explore live figure painting, plein air, still life and portraiture."

Your frustration ends when you talk to Sharon... Sharon Weaver Landscape Painting Instructor
Sharon Weaver is one of the great landscape painters of America. Born with a passion for art, she first attended Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, later transferring to Parsons School. While working for more than a decade in Manhattan, Sharon's career took her all over the world. Visiting Los Angeles, Sharon found the natural beauty and wide open spaces of California a welcome change from the man-made canyons of New York. It didn't take long for her to move here where she has pursued her art of landscape painting.
On Saturday November 9th from 11am-12pm, Artist & Craftsman Supply on La Cienega will be hosting a small Gamblin Oil Paint Demo.
This will serve as a staff training, but we also wanted to extend an invitation to all of Kline Academy teachers and students, some of our favorite and most loyal oil painters, to partake with us. A Gamblin representative will be giving product training, handing out free samples, and answering any questions that arise. It should be a lot of fun!
Please contact (310) 274-8000 and let them know if you would like to attend. Please RSVP by 11/6/19 at the latest.
They will be capping the attendance at 10, so please RSVP as soon as possible if you would like to ensure your spot!

Cheryl Kline, founder and owner of Kline Academy is a working artist whose works are found in the collections of noted individuals and institutions around the world. She has won numerous awards including an Honorable mention from the Portrait Society of America and Salmagundi Club of New York.
She studied with master artist Jan Saether at The Bruchion School of Realist Art the same building as Kline Academy is located today, and at The Florence Academy of Art in Italy. Kline has a Degree in Commercial Art from Woodbury University.
Message from Cheryl
"Not all art schools are built the same. We are often surprised to find long-time art students, who are still trying to learn how to paint! That's why our founder Cheryl made her motto, "your frustration ends at our front door."
Many colleges have become focused on teaching art in a conceptual and historical manner, while many smaller art programs are teaching art in a paint by numbers fashion where everyone does the same painting or offering arts and crafts style classes with little, if any, technique.
At Kline Academy though, you will learn real time tested skills that you can use in your work whether you are taking classes for enjoyment or are working towards a professional career in the arts.
These skills have been passed down from teacher to student for centuries and our instructors have traveled the world studying under the living masters of our time, so that they could teach them to you."
